(230 ) Athamantis is an asteroid of the asteroid belt, which was discovered on September 3, 1882 by Leo Anton Carl de ball at the observatory Bothkamp near Kiel. De Ball had wanted that night actually the asteroid (12 ) Victoria watch.

It was named after celestial bodies Athamantis (or Light ), the daughter of Athamas, king of Thebes, in Greek mythology. Since Athamantis at the time very " bright " was, it could have inspired de ball to the naming.
