( 24587 ) Capaneus is an asteroid from the group of Jupiter Trojans. Thus asteroids are called, which run on the path of Jupiter on the Lagrange points around the sun.

( 24587 ) Capaneus was discovered on 30 September 1973 by the Dutch astronomer Cornelis Johannes van Houten, Ingrid van Houten - Groeneveld and Tom Gehrels at Palomar Observatory. He is associated with the Lagrangian point L4.

The asteroid is named after the king of Argos, Capaneus, named one of the seven heroes in the expedition against Thebes. He is the father of Sthenelus.
