2,5- furandicarboxylic acid is a dicarboxylic acid, which can be produced by dehydration and oxidation of glucose to 5- HMF. Because of their similarity to terephthalic acid can be used as raw material of PET - like biopolymer PEF ( Polyethylenfuranoat ). In chemistry Chemelot at Geleen, the Netherlands is already a pilot plant.
Synthesis
2,5- furandicarboxylic acid may be obtained by selective oxidation of 5 -HMF to platinum catalysts.
There are also the possibilities of biotransformation and the dehydration of the mucus acid. 1876 Rudolph Fittig took this path in the first synthesis of 2,5- furan dicarboxylic acid.
