2600: The Hacker Quarterly

The 2600 magazine (English 2600: The Hacker Quarterly ) is a quarterly American magazine and one of the most important magazines of the hacking and Phreakingszene. It was founded in 1984 by Eric Corley, also known as Emmanuel Goldstein, to life and is primarily concerned with security issues in information and communication technology. It was named the magazine based on a sine tone of 2600 Hz, which illegally free calls could be fraudulently used in the late 60s by phreakers.

In 1999, the magazine of the MPAA was sued for publishing the DeCSS code, referring to the controversial DMCA law. After a sensational trial in New York in 2600 not only had to remove DeCSS from their website, but all the links to other websites where DeCSS was available. The revision in 2001, lost in 2600 also.

In 2012, it became known to a request under the Freedom of Information Act in the United States, that the colloquial shortening of the magazine title " 2600 " belongs to a list of 377 keywords that routinely by the Department of Homeland Security of the United States on public Internet sites is monitored.
