2nd National Hockey League All-Star Game

The second National Hockey League All-Star Game was held on November 3, 1948 in Chicago. The game took place at the Chicago Stadium, the home of the Chicago Blackhawks takes. The NHL All-Stars won 3-1 against the Stanley Cup winners, the Toronto Maple Leafs. For the Maple Leafs, it was the second defeat in the second All-Star Game. The game was watched by 12,749 spectators.

After Bill Tobin, president of the Chicago Blackhawks, had used in the previous year very hard for the introduction of the All-Star Games, he received contrary to the usual rule that the Stanley Cup winners of the previous year must align the game, the commitment for the game in Chicago. The official representatives were loaded into the LaSalle Hotel for a meal before the game by the Chicago Daily News. Here met the leaders on Thomas E. Dewey, the Republican candidate had as there shortly before the presidential election his headquarters. The event was opened with speeches by Clarence Campbell, Conn Smythe, James Norris, Syl Apps, as Chairman of the Pension Fund of the NHL, and Lou Boudreau, president of the Cleveland Indians, the former World Series winner in Major League Baseball.

Unusually this year was the time to em held the game. In the previous year and the following 20 years, the All- Star Game was held just before the season starts. This year, the season was three weeks underway. The All-Stars arrived in the evening before the game and had no way in advance to train together. Nominated were the players from the First and Second All-Star team selected at the end of the preseason. Of this, had coach Tommy Ivan Turk Broda only on who was in the squad of the Maple Leafs, and Buddy O'Connor waive, who had been injured in a car accident on his way to training camp. The coaches had the opportunity of three players for the All- Star team to choose, but could not vote for any players from their own team. The first named player received five points, the second three, and the third one point. Ted Lindsay was awarded the maximum score of 25 points. After each NHL team was represented by at least three players, the choices when selecting for Tommy Ivan were very limited.

The Maple Leafs had to abstain from Syl Apps and Nick Metz, both of which had ended her career before this season from their championship team.

Game History

The players still had the serious violation of Bill Mosienko in memory and played very cautious with little body contact. Hap Day was Howie Meeker, who was handicapped due by an injury, use only a little and mostly replaced him with Joe Klukay. He used the All-Star Game and tested a variant, in which he always aufstellte over the entire game complete blocks with five players and thus has been consistent and the same back with the same attackers.

Lively was especially the first half of the middle third. Here were not only all four gates, there was also an altercation between Gordie Howe and Gus Mortson. The two were not as was customary on our common penalty box, but separated during their punishment by the police. Like last year, defeated Toronto against the All-Star team.
