5 Hydroxyindolylessigsäure (5- HIAA ), a metabolite (metabolite ) of serotonin, and can be used to determine the serotonin levels.

Use

In laboratory medicine, it is used for detecting a carcinoid of enterochromaffin cells. To it is extracted from the urine by diethyl ether, and then the solvent was evaporated. With 1-nitroso -2-naphthol, a red dye whose color intensity with the concentration of 5 -HIAA is increased.

A sensitive detection of 5 -HIAA, among other neurotransmitters such as dopamine, serotonin and norepinephrine, such as Mikrodialysaten is coupled by liquid chromatography (HPLC) with amperometric detection possible.

Biological Significance

Over a still unexplained connection low levels of 5 -HIAA in the cerebrospinal fluid ( CSF) in people with the frequency of occurrence of a "hard" attempted suicide in depressed patients and in children are associated with violent behavior. Also in monkeys was an association between low 5 -HIAA levels in the CSF and increased aggressiveness.
