( 5026 ) Martes is an asteroid of the inner main belt, which was discovered by Czech astronomer Antonín Mrkos on Kleť Observatory (IAU code 046) in Český Krumlov on 22 August 1987. Unconfirmed sightings had already given on 27 August 1976 ( 1976 QL) and on 6 and 10 November 1980 (1980 VA2 ) at the observatory at the purple mountain in Nanjing.

The asteroid belongs to Erigone family, a group of asteroids that is named after (163 ) Erigone. Within the Erigone family is ( 5026 ) Martes named a separate subfamily. At this subfamily include, for example, the asteroid ( 9619 ) Terrygilliam, ( 9879 ) Mammuthus, ( 19415 ) Parvamenon, ( 23011 ) Petach, ( 35270 ) Molinari, ( 37432 ) Piszkéstető, ( 121865 ) Dauvergne, ( 207585 ) Lubar and ( 274084 ) Baldone.

( 5026 ) and stone marten Martes is (Martes foina ) named after the marten species pine marten ( Martes martes ), which at the Kleť Observatory around can be seen in the forest. The appointment was made by the International Astronomical Union ( IAU) on May 4, 1999.
