( 5099 ) Iainbanks is an asteroid of the inner main belt, which was discovered on 16 February 1985 by the Belgian astronomer Henri Debehogne at the La Silla Observatory of the European Southern Observatory in Chile ( IAU code 809). Unconfirmed sightings of the asteroid, there had been before, for example, on 17 November 1979 with the provisional designation 1979 WC7 at the Crimean Observatory in Nautschnyj.

( 5099 ) Iainbanks is named on a proposal of the astronomer José Luis Galache after the Scottish writer Iain Banks. Iain Banks died on 9 June 2013. Publication of the naming of the asteroid by the International Astronomical Union took place 14 days later, on 23 June 2013, with the first publication was false, with the number 29760. This was corrected on 22 July 2013. José Luis Galache estimates the average diameter of the asteroid to 6.1 km.
