( 6615 ) Plutarch is one of the main asteroid belt, which by the Dutch astronomer Cornelis Johannes van Houten, Ingrid van Houten - Groeneveld and Tom Gehrels at Palomar Observatory (IAU code 675) was discovered in California on October 17, 1960.
The asteroid was named after the Greek writer and philosopher Plutarch ( 45-125 ).
Plutarch has a moon that orbits it in about 40.2 hours at an average distance of about 6 km. This moon named S/2007 ( 6615 ) 1 was discovered between the 14 and 21 April 2007 by the astronomer Julian Oey, Donald P. Pray and Petr Pravec due to brightness variations.
