(6676) Monet

( 6676 ) Monet is an asteroid of the outer main belt, which was discovered on 29 September 1973 by the Dutch astronomer Cornelis Johannes van Houten couple and Ingrid van Houten - Groeneveld. The discovery happened during the 2nd Trojan survey, in which the 120 - cm Oschin Schmidt telescope at Palomar Observatory recorded by Tom Gehrels field plates at Leiden University were screened, 13 years after the beginning of the Palomar - Leiden Surveys.

The asteroid is part of the Themis family, a group of asteroids, which was named after ( 24) Themis. The timeless ( nichtoskulierenden ) orbital elements of ( 6676 ) Monet are almost identical with those of seven smaller (if one of the absolute brightness of 14.2, 15.1, 15.2, 16.0, 15.8, 16.4 and 16.2 compared with 13.1 runs out ) asteroids: ( 22634 ) 1998 MN7 ( 135495 ) 2001 XB58, ( 146721 ) 2001 XF8, ( 188984 ) 2008 FV66, ( 223975 ) 2004 XL179 ( 276 638 ) in 2003 and UU208 ( 278 413 ) 2007 RH48.

( 6676 ) Monet was named after the French painter Claude Monet on 4 April 1996. In 1979, an impact crater was named in the northern hemisphere of the planet Mercury by Claude Monet: Monet Mercury crater.
