( 6897 ) Tabei is an asteroid of the inner main belt, which on 15 November 1987 by the Czech astronomer Antonín Mrkos on Kleť Observatory (IAU code 046) was discovered in Český Krumlov.

The Italian astronomer Vincenzo Zappalà has the assistance of a hierarchical cluster analysis in a publication of 1995 ( et al. ) Extrapolated a membership to the asteroid Nysa family, one named after (44 ) Nysa group of asteroids. The group is also called Hertha family, according to (135 ) Hertha. The timeless ( nichtoskulierenden ) orbital elements of ( 6897 ) Tabei are almost identical to those of the two smaller, if we start from the absolute brightness of 16.6 and 17.1 compared with 14.0, asteroid ( 173253 ) 1999 RQ93 and ( 327 186 ) 2005 LC42.

( 6897 ) is named after Tabei Junko Tabei Japanese mountaineer, the first woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest on May 16, 1975. The appointment was made at the suggestion of Czech astronomers Miloš Tichý by the International Astronomical Union ( IAU) on 23 May 2000.
