6Bone

6bone was the name of an IPv6 test network.

Since the development of version 6 of the Internet Protocol from the 1995 test many universities, businesses and individuals IPv6 in their network. Since most routers in the Internet still not forward IPv6 packets that functionality to the own network is limited and there are IPv6 hosts on the Internet.

In order to IPv6 packets still to network B to send from network A, a tunnel between each host both networks is created. Every IPv6 packet to be sent to the other network is packaged by the tunneling mechanism in an IPv4 packet and transported to the destination via IPv4. There, it is unpacked again and passed as an IPv6 packet.

Crosslinking of many such IPv6 islands, the 6bone was established.

According to RFC 3701 used by the 6bone address prefix ( 06/06/06 ) went on 6 June 2006 back to the IANA, whereby the operation of the 6bone is officially over.
