72nd Street (Manhattan)

The 72nd Street is a main road that runs through New York City's district of Manhattan (USA).

Location and History

The 72nd Street runs in both directions between East and West. At the western end it bends to the north end of Riverside Boulevard. The Franklin D. Roosevelt East River Drive (FDR Drive) on the East River is the eastern end of 72nd Street.

The 72nd Street is one of the few streets that run through Central Park. Thus, it connects the Upper West Side on the Women 's Gate, Terrace Drive and Inventors gate with the Upper East Side. However, the Terrace Drive is often closed to traffic. Therefore, the bus line of 72nd Street ( M72 ) crosses the park at the height of 65th Street.

Is located at the intersection of 72nd Street, Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue of the Verdi Square - a small triangular square, opposite the Sherman Square.

Architecture

Before the advent of automobile traffic, the broad, transverse thoroughfares were coveted Building Sites for outstanding mansions of the Gilded Age. The first manor house of this kind was in 1916 replaced by the luxurious 907 block of Fifth Avenue condos at the southwest corner of Fifth Avenue. Also, the residence of Charles Lewis Tiffany, which was built by McKim, Mead and White on the northeast corner of Madison Avenue in 1882 ( 19 East 72nd Street ), was replaced by a block of flats, which was designed by Rosario Candela. Has survived this urban development of the Rhinelander Mansion of the architect Alexander Mackintosh on the southwest corner of Madison Avenue ( 867 Madison Avenue ), which is now home to the flagship store of Ralph Lauren.

At the western end of 72nd Street is located in Riverside Park, a memorial to Eleanor Roosevelt and the landmark Beaux -Arts Chatsworth Apartments (344 West 72nd Street ) by the architect John E. Smith flock ( built: 1902-1904, extension: 1905-1906 ). The well-known residential building The Dakota is located at the corner of West 72nd Street and Central Park West. At the Third Avenue Tower East apartment building established in 1960 a new type of residential high-rises. Through the installation of disk block is set back from the road and has a separate entrance on the ground floor.

On 11 October 2006, the aircraft of the baseball player Cory Lidle crashed into the Belaire Apartments, a 50-storey residential complex at 524 East 72nd Street between York Avenue and the FDR Drive. This Lidle and his flight instructor was killed.
