( 8964 ) Corax is an asteroid of the inner main belt, which was discovered on 17 October 1960 by the Dutch astronomer Cornelis Johannes van Houten couple and Ingrid van Houten - Groeneveld. The discovery came as part of the Palomar - Leiden Survey, which recorded by Tom Gehrels with the 120 - inch Oschin Schmidt telescope at Palomar Observatory field plates at Leiden University were screened.

Asteroids of this family move in an orbital resonance of 4:9 with the planet Mars around the Sun. The group is also called Ariadne family after the asteroid (43 ) Ariadne.

( 8964 ) Corax is named after the Ravens, whose scientific name is Corvus corax. At the time of designation of the asteroid on February 2, 1999, the Raven was on the Dutch Red List of Threatened Species.
