( 9167 ) Kharkiv is one of the outer main belt asteroid, which was discovered by Soviet astronomer Lyudmila Chernykh at September 18, 1987 at the Crimean Observatory in Nautschnyj (IAU code 095).

The asteroid was named after the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv on January 7, 2004. Kharkiv is the second largest city in Ukraine and was from 1919 to 1934, Ukraine's capital. The designation has been awarded to the 350- year anniversary of the city, on a proposal by astronomers of the National Wassy - Karasin University Kharkiv. According to the University itself, the asteroid main belt of the middle ( 10685 ) Kharkivuniver was named on 25 January 2005.
