- Gaius Manlius Valens and Vetus are Roman consuls Gaius Antistius.
- September 18: A group of conspirators murdered the Emperor Domitian, who has suffered through his autocratic rule, the hostility of the Senate. This will cause the Flavian dynasty. For new Princeps Council of Elders elected Senator Marcus Cocceius Nerva.
- In the Roman Empire the Office of Censors is abolished.
