City Wolf (英雄 本色) is an action film directed by John Woo in 1986, which is also known under the title of A Better Tomorrow. Other alternative titles are: The Color of a Hero / Gangland Boss / True Colors of a Hero / City Wolf 1 / City Wolf - A Better Tomorrow and Ying Xiong Ben Se. This film helped the Hong Kong cinema to new success, even internationally, set new standards and created a new style, also called Heroic Bloodshed.

Action

Kit is the Hong Kong Police Department and knows nothing of the criminal activities of his older brother Ho ( Ti Lung ) and Triad member. Mark ( Chow Yun -Fat ) is Ho's best friend and helps him steadily while bartering counterfeit money. Has in a deal in which Ho to do another person, he is arrested by the previously informed police. Mark, who was not involved in the deal, tracks down some traitors and avenge his best friend. Through the exchange of fire his knee is irreparably damaged, so that he is the locomotion possible only with the help of a metal rail. After three years of imprisonment Ho is released, but his brother, who had learned of the double life of his brother wants nothing to do with him. He blames him for the death of her father and the stalling of his career, because pulling it as a precaution against his will by the Triad investigation from, on suspicion of familial taking sides. Ho takes the decision to turn away from his criminal past and to make every effort to make peace with his brother. But that is easier said than done, because the main traitor of yore has now become a powerful syndicate boss who wants to force him to work for him. Ho but remains persistent. Then, his best friend Mark, who may for the triad now clean the shoes and the cars, brutally beaten by them. After a heart-wrenching reunion Ho and Mark join forces and develop together with Kit after they have finally convinced him to destroy the triad a plan. Ho blackmailed the organization based on a tape and determines a location for the handover of money, where it comes to the big showdown between them, the Triad and the police.

Versions

Due to its excessive display of violence, the film was immediately indexed to its publication in Germany. In addition to numerous 18er versions in which violence scenes are missing, there is an uncut, unaudited version on DVD, which is reduced by a short action scene. This scene is included as bonus material. All television versions over the past millennium were also cut. Since 1997, the film is no longer being transmitted.

Awards

The film won two awards at the Hong Kong Film Awards. Chow Yun -Fat was honored as best actor and City Wolf won the award for Best Film. In nine other categories, the film received nominations, so among other things John Woo for Best Director.

Remake

In 2010, John Woo produced in South Korea, a remake under the original title Mujeogia that from September 6, 2011 as the A Better Tomorrow 2K12 is available in Germany. The action location but was relocated from China to South Korea. The screenplay for the remake wrote Hyo- seok Kim, Taek - kyung Lee, Geun -mo Choi and Kim Hae- gon. Directed by Hae-sung Song. The remake follows in broad features of the original, but is due to more characters and a complex pattern of relationships about 30 minutes longer. Due to a reduced level of action and violence, the remake could be released as early as 16 years.
