A Christmas Cantata (Honegger)

Une Cantate de Noël (. Ger A Christmas Story, A Christmas Cantata engl ) is a cantata by the Swiss composer Arthur Honegger in 1953; it is considered as Honegger's last work. The cantata is written for mixed choir, baritone solo, organ and orchestra, and a small children's choir and describes the biblical Christmas story.

Work

The cantata is divided into three parts: the first part describes the turmoil of the world before the coming of the Messiah ( Choir Theme De profundis ), the second part consists of a potpourri based on the melodies of many well known Christmas carols such as " O Holy Night ", "Silent night "," Es ist ein Ros sprung "or" Il est né le divin enfant ". The third part is a solemn chorus in C major ( Laudate dominum ), which in the orchestral circuit ( with a resumption of dissonance from the first part ) opens.
