A dos Cunhados is a comune ( Freguesia ) at the Portuguese circuit ( concelho ) of Torres Vedras. 8349 inhabitants live in it (as at 30 June 2011).

History

Since the Paleolithic people settled here. In the 9th century, it was a Christian monastery, the attacks of the Moors resisted, who had settled in the course of their conquest from 711 in the near Torres Vedras.

The first mention of the modern village dates back to 1527, when the village in a community then existing around the monastery. The inhabitants of the place began here in 1570 the construction of a chapel. The Archbishop of Lisbon in 1572 allowed that there officially masses were held, and decided in 1581 to set up their own community A dos Cunhados.

In 1995, the place to Vila ( town ) has been charged.

The place name

Founder of the town, three Schwager ( Portuguese: Cunhado ) have been. Thus, the original settlement as Lugar dos Cunhados (German: place of brother ) was known, according to the tradition. The resulting locally common place name is via the shortened Dos Cunhados to A dos Cunhados (English about: The brother in law ) have transformed.

Culture, Sports and Attractions

Among the monuments of the community the remains of the company founded in the 9th century convent ( Convento de Nossa Senhora da Graça de Penafirme ), the Ruínas do Convento de Penafirme, junto à foz include da Ribeira do Sorraia (English: Ruins of the Convent of Penafirme, at the mouth of the Ribeira do Sorraia ). After several expansions and renovations, the monastery suffered damage in the earthquake of 1755 basic Lisbon and became uninhabitable. The monks built the monastery then about 2.5 km from new, and the old monastery fell into disrepair since then. In addition, to visit prehistoric tombs in burrows and caves ( Grutas ), and built in the 18th century, embellished with azulejos parish church Igreja de Paroquial A- dos - Cunhados (also Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Luz ).

The landscape of the municipality of A dos Cunhados is a protected part of the landscape of the Extremadura - Oeste, the western Extremadura.

The municipality has a number of seaside resorts and beaches that have been awarded part of the Blue Flag, and the occasional venue for sports events, in particular the international surfing competition Santa Cruz Ocean Spirit - Festival Internacional de Desportos de Ondas at the beach Praia do Mirante, at Santa Cruz.
