A dos Cunhados is a comune ( Freguesia ) at the Portuguese circuit ( concelho ) of Torres Vedras. 8349 inhabitants live in it (as at 30 June 2011).

History

Since the Paleolithic people settled here. In the 9th century, it was a Christian monastery, the attacks of the Moors resisted, who had settled in the course of their conquest from 711 in the near Torres Vedras.

The first mention of the modern village dates back to 1527, when the village in a community then existing around the monastery. The inhabitants of the place began here in 1570 the construction of a chapel. The Archbishop of Lisbon in 1572 allowed that there officially masses were held, and decided in 1581 to set up their own community A dos Cunhados.

In 1995, the place to Vila ( town ) has been charged.

The place name

Among the monuments of the community the remains of the company founded in the 9th century convent ( Convento de Nossa Senhora da Graça de Penafirme ), the Ruínas do Convento de Penafirme, junto à foz include da Ribeira do Sorraia (English: Ruins of the Convent of Penafirme, at the mouth of the Ribeira do Sorraia ).
