A Flock of Seagulls

A Flock of Seagulls is a new-wave band that was founded in 1979 in Liverpool under the name Tontrix. The greatest hits in Germany were I Ran (1982 ), Wishing ( If I Had a Photograph of You) (1983) and The More You Live, The More You Love (1984).

History

1979-1981: The establishment phase

A Flock of Seagulls were formed by Mike Score and his brother Ali in 1979 in Liverpool. Mike Score, a skilled hairdresser, played keyboards and guitar and sang. His brother Ali served the drums, and a fellow hairdresser Frank Maudsley, took over the bass. Meanwhile played Mark Edmondson on drums, his friend Paul Reynolds then came at the age of 17 years to the band after guitarist Willie Woo had left the band in the middle during a series of planned appearances unannounced. The band continued to write songs and toured clubs in search of a record deal. Finally they released in the spring of 1981, their debut EP, Modern Love Is Automatic / Telecommunication. While the EP did not make it into the charts, the title song Telecommunication was a Untergrundhit in the New Wave clubs.

1981-1984: The Successes

The end of 1981 the band signed a contract with major label Jive Records, and released their debut album A Flock of Seagulls appeared in spring 1982. I Ran ( So Far Away ) was released as the first single. MTV took a liking to the video, which contained long shots of Mike Score and his flamboyant hairstyle. Due to the large presence on MTV, the single climbed in the summer of 1982 in the U.S. Top Ten and ripped the album in the charts. In the UK, managed to I Ran although not even in the top 40, but in the same year reached Wishing ( If I Had a Photograph of You), the first pre - extraction from their second album list, which was 10th place in 1983 lists and more singles from it published, all of them with moderate success. Also published in 1984, third album The Story of a Young Heart was moderately successful but without bring out the big hit single. The highest placing yet reached the first single The More You Live, the More You Love ( # 26 in the UK).

1984-1986: The decay

After the album Reynolds left the band and was replaced by Gary Steadnin; also met keyboardist Chris Chryssaphis it. The new lineup released the poppier album Dream Come True, which no longer able to build on the earlier successes in 1986. Shortly after the band fell apart.

1989 to today

1989 Mike formed a new band score under the name of A Flock of Seagulls and went since then repeatedly with a rotating cast on tour.

In 1995, a new album called The Light at the End of the World was published.

In November 2003, A Flock Of Seagulls were the original members (Mike and Ali Score, Paul Reynolds and Frank Maudsley ) on the music channel VH1 in the series Bands Reunited. In September 2004, the four again gave several concerts in the United States, but afterwards went immediately back their own way.

Since 2005, Mike score goes back with a new cast on tour. In September 2009, the formation was including five concerts in Germany, where in addition to some new songs especially the old hits were played.

Background

The band's name is borrowed from a line of text of the song Toiler on the Sea by The Stranglers.

Awards

The song D.N.A. 1982 received a Grammy Award as " Best Rock Instrumental Performance ".
