A Glass of Water (1960 film)

The glass of water is a comedy in five acts by the French writer Eugène Scribe.

Action

The play takes place at the court of the last Stuart Queen Anne of England. It is the 18th century during the Spanish War of Succession - Anna but is not a strong ruler, but is under the influence of the Duchess of Marlborough. The Queen 's efforts to bring peace, the Duchess, however, hopes to profit from the war because her husband is commander in chief of the British Army.

The greatest enemy of the Duchess is Lord Bolingbroke, who wants peace, to turn off the family Marlborough and become Prime Minister of England. His advantage is a young officer of the Royal Guard. Queen Anne, as well as the Duchess are both in love with him. About this emotion the Lord spins his court intrigue.

Performances

The premiere took place in Paris on 17 November 1840. Translated into many languages, it is still often listed.

Radio play version

The ORF produced in 1951 a radio play version with members of the Vienna Burgtheater ( First broadcast on September 21, 1951). Raoul Aslan said Lord Bolingbroke, the Duchess Maria ice and Alma Seidler Queen Anne. In addition, Eva Gold as Abigail and Erich Auer as Masham.

Films

1960 filmed Helmut Käutner the fabric. Liselotte Pulver is seen as Queen Anne, Hilde Krahl as Duchess and Gustaf as Lord Bolingbroke. Horst Janson plays the young officer Arthur who gets a heartbreaker in the crossfire of emotion and politics. He and the maid of honor Sabine Sinjen give the Buffopaar. Sinjens become popular chanson by Bernhard Eichhorn is: There must be at Arthur himself, / that all women fly at him

Television version

Dating back to 1977, a television version of the ZDF: OW Fischer can be seen in the role of Lord Bolingbroke, Mary Becker and Susanne Uhlen as Duchess as Queen Anne. In addition, Sylvia Manas play as Abigail, Oliver Tobias as Masham and as the Marquis de Torcy Romuald Pekny. Directed by Wolfgang Glück.
