A (Kana)

あin hiragana orアin katakana ( romanised a) is one of the Japanese kana, which represents a Mora. あbased on the sōsho style of kanji安,アis derived from the radical of the kanji阿. In the modern Japanese alphabetical sorting it comes first, beforeい. It is also the 36th letter in Iroha, immediately after and beforeてさ. The Hiragana includes Kana no in combination with a cross. The Unicode forあis U 3041 and U 30 A2 is forア. The icons represents the [ a] dar.

Derivation

The katakanaアforwards, from via man'yōgana, from kanji阿. The Hiraganaあderives from the kanji安.

Variants

The scaled-down versions of the kana (ぁ,ァ) are used to represent in the Japanese language external monitor, for exampleファ( fa).
