A. B. Shah

AB Shah ( * 1920, † 1981) was an Indian civil rights. He was the founder of the secular- humanist Indian Secular Society.

Life

Shah's family belonged to Jainism. However, he came early in contact with atheism. By Ernst Haeckel's writings, he came to the conclusion that not only God but also the soul does not exist. Other influences came from Manabendra Nath Roy. By Hamid Dalwai he dealt with Islam and founded with him the reformist Muslim organization, the Muslim Satyashodhak Mandal. So he gave the problems of Indian Muslims wide attention. He gave Jayaprakash Narayan's prison diaries out. Shah was until his death the editor of the journal The Secularist.
