A. David Thackeray

Andrew David Thackeray (born 19 June 1910 in Chelsea, London, † 21 February 1978) was a British astronomer.

Thackeray's father was the scholar Henry St. John Thackeray ( 1869-1930 ). He went to school at Eton College and studied mathematics at King's College (Cambridge). He worked from 1934 to 1936 at Mount Wilson Observatory and received his PhD in 1937 in Cambridge. From 1937 to 1948 he was deputy director of the Solar Physics Observatory, Cambridge. From 1951 he was director of the Radcliffe Observatory in South Africa, until he retired in 1974. He was an honorary professor at the University of Cape Town and shortly before his death, a member of the Royal Astronomical Society.

Thackeray died on February 21, 1978 in a traffic accident.
