A. Jeff McLemore

Atkins Jefferson " Jeff" McLemore (* March 13, 1857 in Spring Hill, Tennessee; † March 4, 1929 in Laredo, Texas ) was an American politician. Between 1915 and 1919 he represented the state of Texas in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Jeff McLemore attended both public and private schools. In 1878 he moved to Texas, where he worked as a cowboy and a newspaper reporter. Later he worked in Colorado and Mexico in mining. He then worked in San Antonio in the newspaper industry. In the following years he was a newspaper editor in the cities of Corpus Christi, Austin and Houston. At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party. Between 1892 and 1896 he was a member of the Texas House of Representatives; 1896 to 1898 he sat on the city council of Austin.

In the years 1900 to 1904 McLemore served as secretary of the Democratic Party of Texas. In the congressional elections of 1914 he was in the 18th electoral district of Texas in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Hatton W. Sumners on March 4, 1915. After a re-election he was able to complete in Congress until March 3, 1919 two legislative sessions. These were shaped by the events of the First World War. In 1918, he was not nominated by his party for re-election.

After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives McLemore again worked in the newspaper industry. In 1928 he ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. Senate. He died on 4 March 1929 in Laredo and was buried in Austin.
