A. Le Coq is an Estonian brewery and beverage factory based in Tartu.

History

The Baltic German Justus Reinhold Schramm founded in 1826 in Tartu the first brewery in the area of present-day Estonia. His son Eduard Anton Justus Schramm began fifty years later with the construction of one of the most modern breweries in the Russian Empire, which was inaugurated in 1875 in Tartu. 1884, the operation of the entrepreneur Moritz Friedrich was sold, who extended them further. 1898 the company got the name Actien Society of beer and meth - brewery and Destillatur Tivoli. The company was taken over in 1913 by the joint stock company A. Le Coq & Co, which the Belgians Albert Le Coq was founded in 1807 in London. The aim of the takeover was a better position of A. Le Coq on the Russian market.

With the Soviet occupation of Estonia, the company was expropriated and renamed Tartu Õlletehas. She remained one of the most popular brands of beer and mineral water manufacturers of the Soviet Union. With the restoration of Estonian independence was re-privatized in 1995.
