A.F.M. Ahsanuddin Chowdhury

Abul Fazal Mohammad " AFM" Ahsanuddin Chowdhury ( born July 1, 1915 in Mymensingh, British India; † August 30, 2001 in Dhaka, Bangladesh) was 1982-1983 President of the Republic of Bangladesh and a member of the Jatiya Party.

Biography

Chowdhury studied at the University of Dhaka Law and completed his studies with a Bachelor of Laws. He joined in 1942 into the public judicial service and worked as a district judge in the cities Sylhet, Rangpur and Dhaka. In December 1968 he was appointed a judge of the Supreme Court of Dhaka by the then President Muhammed Ayub Khan. In January 1974 he became Supreme Court Justice of the new Republic of Bangladesh. In July 1977 he resigned his judgeship.

In March 1982, the General Hossain Mohammad Ershad overthrew President Abdus Sattar and sat Chowdhury as a new president, but at the same time retained the de facto power in the state. In March 1983, he finally took the reins of the presidency.

Chowdhury died in 2001. He belonged to Islam.
