The Aalto University (Finnish Aalto yliopisto, Swedish Aalto universitet ) is a Finnish university in the capital Helsinki and its neighboring city of Espoo. It was in 2010 formed by merger of three formerly independent colleges and is named after the Finnish architect Alvar Aalto.

History

The Aalto University was formally established on 1 January 2010 by the merger of the Helsinki University of Technology, Helsinki School of Economics and the University of Art and Design Helsinki.

The existing universities will continue to exist as a sub-areas or schools in the newly established University.

Aalto University School of Science and Technology

The Aalto University School of Science and Technology, established in 2011 from the former Helsinki University of Technology, which was founded in 1849 originated from the Technical School of Helsinki. The formation of the Institute of Technology in the mid-19th century founded the organized technical training in Finland. In 1872 it was renamed the Polytechnic School of Helsinki and Helsinki Polytechnic Institute in 1879. Campus and students
