Aar Glaciers

The Aargletscher are a group of glaciers in the eastern Bernese Alps on Finstaarhorn.

There are four huge ice streams that descend from the Firnmulden the Finsteraarhorngruppe in the background of the Haslital; first the Oberaargletscher whose outflow is the River Aare, which receives the drainage of the Lower after a short run. The latter arises from the union of two higher altitudes ice streams that descend from the high valleys on Schreckhorn and be separated by the ridge of Lauteraarhörner, namely the Lauteraargletschers and Finsteraargletschers, the latter passes at the foot of the Finsteraarhorn.

The Aargletscher have gained through the scientific studies Franz Joseph HUGIS (1827 ) and Louis Agassiz ' (1840 ) an increased interest. Both were particularly interested in the flow rate of glaciers. Built by Josef Hugi on the Aargletscher hut that served as a research station, changed its position from 1827 to 1830 by 100 m to 1836 m and 724 to 1842 to 1428 m.

The Aargletscher submitted during the last glacial periods much further north and joined the Central Plateau to the Rhône glacier in the south west and the Rhine glacier in the northeast.
