Abbey of Notre-Dame des Dombes

The Notre -Dame des Dombes Abbey is a Trappist monastery in Le Plantay, 40 km north-east of Lyon in the Région Rhône -Alpes département of Ain, in the heart of the countryside Dombes.

History

The monastery was founded in 1863 by Trappist monks at the request of the Bishop of Belley GERAULT Pierre de Langalerie. 44 monks of the monastery Aiguebelle moved into the new convent. The agricultural work of the Trappists led to a more effective agriculture in place and thus to improve the living conditions of the population.

During the Second World War 35 monks of the abbey were confiscated. The abbey was involved in the Resistance. They were resistance fighters, who were hiding in the surrounding wilderness shelter. On May 19, 1944, two monks were murdered by the Germans and others arrested.

In 1946, the abbey received the insignia of Knight of the Legion of Honour.

The Groupe des Dombes exists as an ecumenical consortium of twenty Protestant and Roman Catholic French-speaking theologians since 1937. The group met from 1968 to 1997 in the Abbey.
