Abbey of Rathmelsigi

Rathmelsigi was an important monastery of the Iroschottischen church in the 7th century. It was, according to tradition in the region Connacht in Ireland.

History

The monastery Rathmelsigi played in the 7th century at times a significant role in the education of missionaries, who were sent from Ireland to the Mission to the European mainland. Under Ecgberht of Ripon training of Willibrord, Werenfried and Suitbert took place here, among other things, which are now worshiped along with other descendants of the monastery in the Roman Catholic Church as a saint.

The holy Benedictine Bede Historia Ecclesiastica Gentis reported in its Anglorum that residents of the monastery were 664 mostly like a plague victim. Despite the pivotal importance of the monastery in the mission its location until today could not be clarified in research. Because of the known members of the monastery is also speculated in research on whether there has possibly been a convent of the Benedictines.
