Abbots Langley

Abbots Langley is a village in the English county of Hertfordshire, situated near St Albans between Watford and Hemel Hempstead on the M25. For a long time the place belonged to Watford and was part of the Rural District of the city. Since 1974, the community is part of the Three Rivers ( district ).

History

The Norman Paul de Caen founded this village. It is first mentioned under the name Langelai in the Domesday Book.

Attractions

The Methodist Church was built in 1154 and renovated in 1974.

Famous people

Nicholas Breakspear was born 1100 in Abbots Langley. As Adrian IV in 1154 he was elected so far only English pope. The archaeologist John Evans (1823-1908) was buried here. The English soccer star Manuel Almunia lives here in a complex in which it is to be haunted. The garden designer Tom Stuart -Smith lives in Serge Hill in a converted scrub with extensive gardens.

Economy

In the south of the village, the Leavesden film studios have settled on a former airfield. Among other scenes of James Bond films, Sleepy Hollow and Harry Potter were filmed.
