The Abbotsford International Airport ( IATA: YXX, ICAO: CYXX ) is an airport located in the Canadian province of British Columbia. It is located four kilometers southwest of the center of Abbotsford and three kilometers north of the border to the USA.

Abbotsford is the second largest airport in the region Lower Mainland and measured by the number of flight movements of the sixth largest in Canada. He serves as a relief for airliners to and from the 75 km further west Vancouver International Airport. In addition, he is approached by a number of charter and budget airlines ( especially Westjet Airlines) and is the general civil aviation available. Every year in August, at the airport, the Abbotsford International Airshow held, one of the largest air shows in the country.

History

After the start of the Commonwealth Air Training Plan, the Royal Canadian Air Force ( RCAF ) held out for suitable locations for the training of pilots. In 1940 she acquired outside of Abbotsford land and built an airfield, which was completed in September 1943.

From 1952 to 1958, the airfield was closed and was passed on 1 April 1958 by the Air Force at the Department of Transportation. This was converted into a Hangar 2 terminal. Abbotsford is mainly used for general aviation as well as an alternate location for the Vancouver International Airport. In 1962, the first air show was held.

On 1 January 1997 the operation was handed over to the city Abbotsford Department of Transportation. In the same year Abbotsford officially became an airport for passenger traffic. End of December 1998 was put into operation a new terminal building.
