Abbott Handerson Thayer

Abbott Handerson Thayer ( born August 12, 1849 in Boston, Massachusetts, † May 29 1921 in Monadnock, New Hampshire) was an American painter.

Life

After his schooling Thayer came to New York to study first at the Brooklyn Art School and later at the National Academy of Design Art. His teachers there were the painters HD Morse and Lemuel Wilmarth. At the age of 25 years Thayer went to Paris in 1875 and continued his studies at the École des Beaux -Arts continues. He remained there for three years the pupil of Jean -Léon Gérôme and Henri Lehmann.

1879 Thayer returned back to the U.S. and settled as a freelance artist in New York down. His artistic early work was still mainly of landscape and wildlife images and was aligned with the Barbizon School. Even the writings of Ralph Waldo Emerson Thayer influenced very much. In New York, he is transformed by the time a sought-after portraitist. One of his earliest portraits was "The sisters", a celebrated double portrait of Clara and Bessie Stillman.

The National Academy of Design in New York chose him in 1889 to an extraordinary member, in 1901 he became a full member. Like his compatriot Douglas Folk, who was also a pupil of Jean -Léon Gérôme, Thayer was a corresponding member of the Accademia di San Luca in Rome.

1901 Thayer settled with his family in Dublin (New Hampshire) down. There, in a secluded rural retreat, he lived with his wife, the flower painter Emma and his children Gerald, later writers, Gladys, who later became miniature painter, and Mary, which often served as a model to him. During this time, Thayer led a long correspondence with, among others, Charles Lang Freer, Theodore Roosevelt and Mark Twain.

Together with his son Gerald Thayer published in 1909 " Concealing coloration in the animal kingdom " in which he made ​​his thoughts about the camouflage of soldiers in the First World War.

As one of his few students his compatriot Ben Foster is mentioned.

At the age of 70 years, Abbott Handerson Thayer died on 29 May 1921 in Monadnock. Thayer was one of the most important American painters of his time.
