ABC Islands (Alaska)

The ABC Islands are a collective term for the islands Iceland Admiralty, Baranof and Chichagof Iceland Iceland in the northwest of the Alexander Archipelago, which is in turn in southeast Alaska. There is little industry and small human settlement on these islands.

Most of the islands are nature reserves, Admiralty Iceland is presented almost entirely as a National Monument. On the islands there is a significant population of brown bears. Analyzes showed that the brown bear population in the ABC Islands has a strong genetic proportion of polar bears. Because all polar bears descended from brown bears, but indicate the gene relationships in this case to a transfer in the opposite direction, it seems to have come to an unusual genetic drift in jüngerern periods in this region.
