Abdurrahman Sharafkandi

Hejar (Kurdish ههژار; Real name Abdurahman Scharafkandi, Ebdurehman Şerefkendî; * 1920 in Mahabad, † 22 February 1990 in Karaj ) was a famous Kurdish writer, poet, linguist and translator. He has translated the Koran into Kurdish and created with the Henbane Borine a Kurdish - Persian dictionary.

He was born in 1920 in Mahabad in northwestern Iran in the province of West Azerbaijan. He began in his early childhood with religious studies, but had it at age 17 when his father died, cancel. He now began to write poems in Kurdish in 1940. He was influenced by other Kurdish poets through his studies of the Kurdish literature. Among them were such that Melaye Cezîrî, Ehmedê XANI, Wefayi and Haji Qadiri Koyi.

He was involved in the Kurdish national movement, which was led by Qazi Muhammad. Since the proclaimed Republic of Kurdistan in Mahabad (1947 ) had as one of its objectives to promote Kurdish culture, Hejar was one of their official poet. After the end of the Republic, he was forced to go into exile.

For about 30 years he lived in various countries. Including Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Egypt. In Iraq, he was again involved with the Kurdish national movement, which was led by Mustafa Barzani, the former Defence Minister of the Republic of Mahabad. With him Hejar also joined a close friendship. After the defeat of the movement in 1975, Hejar returned to Iran and settled in the city of Karaj. There he lived until his death. He was buried in his native city of Mahabad.

His brother Sadegh Scharafkandi was an important politician, who was killed at the Mykonos assassination in Berlin.
