Abel Barrera Hernández

Abel Barrera Hernández ( born April 10, 1960 in Tlapa de Comonfort, Guerrero State, Mexico) is a Mexican priest and anthropologist and one of the leading human rights activists for the natives in his country.

Life

Abel Barrera Hernández was born in Tlapa de Comonfort in the Mexican state of Guerrero, as one of 4 children. He studied 1982-1994 first theology and later anthropology at the National School of Anthropology y Historia in Mexico City.

He stands close to the liberation theology. In 1994 he founded the Centro de Derechos Humanos de la Montana, the "Centre for Human Rights", in the mountains in Tlachinolla. This center is committed to the rights of the persecuted natives of Mexico and could reach successes among other international courts. The organization is supported by several religious and non- religious organizations. For over ten years, Abel Barrera Hernández receives death threats.

Abel Barrera Hernández In May 2011, was awarded the Amnesty International Human Rights Award of the German section of Amnesty International.
