Abel Prieto

Abel Prieto Jiménez ( born November 11, 1950 in Pinar del Río, Cuba ) is a Cuban politician, writer, editor and teacher. He was from 1997 to 2012 Minister of Culture of Cuba. In March 2012 he was appointed Adviser to the President Raúl Castro, thus giving his post as Minister of Culture on. Abel Prieto is a Member of the Cuban Parliament.

Life

Abel Prieto studied Spanish literature at the University of Havana, where he was later a professor. He was editor of Letras Latinas, and later became chairman of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba, the umbrella organization of cultural workers in Cuba. In 1997 he was Minister of Culture.

In 1999 he published the novel El vuelo del gato of moving between fiction and essay. The novel was the winner of the Critics Award in 2001 and was later moved into Spain. In addition, Prieto wrote several collections of short stories, including Los bitongos y los guapos (1980) and Noche de sábado (1989).

On the XXI. Book Fair of Havana, he presented February 13, 2012 his second novel Viajes de Miguel Luna.
