Aboriginal Shire of Yarrabah

Geography

The Shire consists of a long stretch of coastline east of Cairns. The only settlement is Yarrabah in the north of the LGA.

History

In 1892, the Anglican priest John Gribble at Cape Grafton an Aboriginal mission. 1904, the indigenous inhabitants of Fraser Iceland were forcibly relocated here. By 1960, the church managed the settlement, then they went to the state. In 1987, the land was held in trust passed to the Aborigines and placed under local self-government.

Management

The Yarrabah Council has five members. The Mayor ( mayor) and four other Councillor shall be elected by all residents of the Shire. The LGA is not divided into electoral districts.
