Abraham Vanderveer

Abraham Vanderveer (* 1781 in Kings County, New York, † July 21, 1839 in Brooklyn, New York ) was an American politician. Between 1837 and 1839 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Abraham Vanderveer was born during the War of Independence in Kings County and grew up there. He attended community schools. Then he worked 1816-1821 and 1822-1837 as town clerk ( county clerk ) in Kings County. After the founding of the Brooklyn Savings Bank, he was elected there to the treasurer ( treasurer ). Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party. In the congressional elections of 1836 Vanderveer was in the second electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Samuel Barton on March 4, 1837. Since he resigned in 1838 to run again, he retired after March 3, 1839, from from the Congress. He died on July 21, 1839 in Brooklyn and was then buried in the Reformed Dutch Cemetery. About seven years later, the Mexican -American War broke out.
