Absheron District

Absheron (Russian Апшерон / Apsheron ) is a rayon in the east of Azerbaijan on the Caspian Sea. Capital is the city Xirdalan. The name of the district derives from the Persian Abshuran ( آبشوران ), which means as much as place of saline water.

Geography

The rayon has an area of ​​1361 km ² and consists of level. The rayon is located partially on the Absheron peninsula and was created in 1963. In the district there are nine towns and five villages.

Economy

In the region of olives, grapes, figs, cereals and almonds are grown. Also recovered from the sea salt. It is also grown and processed livestock products in the region. In addition, there are oil and gas deposits that are exploited. In addition, the district is a recreation area for the people of the adjoining metropolitan Baku.

Population

The population is 96.2 % of Azerbaijanis. The rayon had 2009 189.400 inhabitants.
