AC Omonia

Omonia Nicosia Athletic Club (Greek: Αθλητικός Σύλλογος Ομόνοια Λευκωσίας / Athlitikos Syllogos Omonoia Lefkosias, Translated: Athletics club Eintracht Nicosia) is a Cypriot sports club from the capital Nicosia. He offers in addition to the well-known first-class playing football department also basketball, volleyball, cycling and futsal.

History

The club was founded in 1948 and joined in 1953 the Cypriot Association CFA in order henceforth to play in the First Division. In the 1960/61 season, the first league title in their history succeeded. 1965, the club was first Cup Winners' Cup, as Apollon Limassol was clearly beaten in the final 5-1. With six consecutive league titles from 1974 to 1979 Omonia holds the record in Cypriot football. Especially Sotiris Kaiafas, the 39 hits won the Golden Boot in 1976, was an important pillar of the team.

After more league titles were won in the 1980s and several cup wins were celebrated, Omonia lost its supremacy in Cypriot football in the 1990s to local rivals APOEL Nicosia and Anorthosis Famagusta. So you had to wait until 2001 after the championship in 1993 and the Cup victory in 1994 against Anorthosis Famagusta before we again wrote success story with the Double.

2010, the club won the Cypriot Championship, but failed in the third qualifying round for the UEFA Champions League in the Austrian champions FC Red Bull Salzburg 1:1 and 1:4. 2011 and 2012, the association was able to save twice in succession the cup win and now has 14 successes on the account.

The supporters of Omonia are assigned to the left-wing camp. The club originated from the spin-off of APOEL Nicosia, the verschlug in the Greek civil war on the side of the right.
