Acetanilide is an aniline derivative in which about 1886 randomly due to a confusion with naphthalene of the Strassburger doctors Arnold Cahn and Paul Hepp antipyretic and anti-inflammatory effect was observed. Because of the toxic effect, however, the medical success as an antipyretic was from, but this two derivatives of the substance, the phenacetin and paracetamol later took over. Acetanilide can be prepared, inter alia, acetyl chloride and aniline.
