Acetosyringone is a naturally occurring chemical compound. The light brown in not completely pure state powder dissolves slightly in water. Acetosyringone is one of the substances that are secreted by wounded plant cells, and is therefore a secondary plant substance. It also plays a role in the metabolism of insect pheromone. The name of the connection originates - analogous to syringol, Syringaalkohol, syringaldehyde or syringic - from the Latin name of the lilac (Syringa ).
Use
Acetosyringone has significance for plant biotechnology. There, it is used as an additive in the transformation with Agrobacteria, since, as a number of other phenol derivatives is capable of causing an infection with the bacterium Agrobacterium tumefaciens, which can be used to inject any genetic material in the plant. This is especially true for monocotyledonous plants ( monocots ), which poorly or not can be transformed without this addition. However, among these all important crops such as maize, wheat, rye, rice and oats.
In addition, acetosyringone can enhance the activity of peroxidases and oxidases.
