Acetoxy group

The acetoxy group, abbreviated AcO or OAc, a functional group which is derived from acetic acid (see figure). It differs from the acetyl group CH3 -C ( = O) - (Ac) with an additional oxygen atom. The oxidation of ethanol yields acetaldehyde acetic acid via the intermediate, in which one hydrogen atom is bonded to the acetoxy group. In the acetylation of alcohols or phenols with acetyl chloride in the presence of a base to form the acetic acid esters, which contain an acetoxy radical, the alkyl or aryl radical is bonded. The name is a shortening of the name acetoxy acetyl -oxy.

Acetoxylation

Acetoxylation as the addition of an acetoxy group is referred to in the organic chemistry.
