In the first sentence is the first verse of the song Oh God, how much heartache by Martin Moller ( 1587 ) used the last contains the second verse of Martin Behms chorale O Jesus Christ, my 's life light 1610, the same also the basis for the mourning cantata ( BWV 118). The poet of the middle movements is unknown.

Topic

The Gospel of the Sunday after New Year tells of the flight of the Holy Family from Herod to Egypt (Matthew 2:13-15 LUT). The cantata sets this story from the world as a struggle against the faith. Here, analogous to other dialogue cantatas, the soprano " faithful soul " as the voice of the bass is interpreted as the voice of God or Christ in the rule. The dramatic and contrasting musical arrangement of Bach supports this interpretation.
