Achatinellidae

The Achatinellidae are a family of terrestrial, tropical snails from the subordination of terrestrial snails ( gastropod ). It is the only family of the superfamily Achatinelloidea. Occasionally, the German common name tree snails used for the family, but which is also used for species of the superfamily Helicoidea and therefore should not be used for this tropical family.

Features

The housings are wound right or left, and very close to umbilicate. They are predominantly hochkonisch, oblong- ovate and small to medium size. The embryonic turns are smooth striped or weak spiral. The later whorls, five to seven in number, are smooth or radially finned. The relatively large orifice may be modified by parietal or spindle slats. The mouth edges may be simple, bent or thickened. An inner lip is formed with a few exceptions. In the genital apparatus no epiphallus is generally formed on the penis. The inner walls of the penis, the characteristic " achatinelliden " pillar, which can also be modified, however. The peniale appendix is usually present, but may be modified or reduced or even absent. The peniale Retraktormuskel is usually branched, rarely also easy. The prostate consists of a few up to numerous, finger-shaped and simple acini at the base of the gland, or albumin extended along the uterus. A blind pouch is missing. The stem of the spermathecae has no diverticula.

Geographic occurrence and life

The species of the family originally came well before only on the islands of the Pacific Ocean. Among them are many endemic species whose occurrence is limited to a single island. Some species are (now ) widespread in Indonesia and on some islands of the Indian Ocean. Presumably they came to these islands by anthropogenic deportation or have been introduced.

System

The superfamily includes Bouchet & Rocroi after (2005 ), only the eponymous family Achatinellidae. Schileyko (1998), the superfamily to the family Amastridae, which is provided by Bouchet & Rocroi contrast to the superfamily Cochlicopoidea.
