Acheron River (Canterbury)

The Acheron River is located in the Canterbury region of the South Island of New Zealand. It flows south from Lake Lyndon in the Rakaia River.

Riverside smaller coal deposits were found. In the 1870s there was a proposal to extend the White Cliffs branch line through the Rakaia Gorge to the Acheron River to get access to coal reserves. 1880 advocated a Royal Commission to enlargement, however, was never realized.
