Achkhoy-Martan

Atschchoi -Martan (Russian Ачхой - Мартан, Chechen ТIехьа - Марта ) is a village ( selo ) in the Republic of Chechnya ( Russia) with 20.172 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 )

Geography

The settlement is situated on the northern edge of the Greater Caucasus, increase its foothills a few miles south of town on a good 600 meters. The village is located about 35 km as the crow west-southwest of the Republic capital Grozny at the Fortanga, a tributary of the right Terek Creek Sunzha 10 km above the mouth.

Atschchoi -Martan is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons Atschchoi -Martan.

History

The old Chechen village was initially under the name Atschegi -Kala (Russian Ачeги - Kaлa, ch etsch. Iaьчка - ГIaлa ) known. On January 23, 1935 it was the administrative center of a newly established, Rajons same name. In the period of the abolition of the Chechen autonomy and deportation of the Chechen people from 1944 to 1957 and Rajon village wore the Russian name Nowoselskoje.

During the First Chechen War, 1994-1996, the village was badly damaged.

Infrastructure

About six kilometers north of the village leads the highway M29 from Rostov-on- Don over to the Azerbaijani border. A few miles beyond the road is the nearest railway station Samaschkinskaja at the track Beslan - Grozny - Gudermes.
