Achnasheen

Achnasheen ( Scottish Gaelic: Achadh na Sine, translated field of Storms ) is a small village in the Highland Council Area in Scotland. It is located in the Highlands in the valley of the River Bran at the Kyle of Lochalsh line about halfway between Inverness and Kyle of Lochalsh and is a regional road traffic junction on the A832 between Dingwall and Kinlochewe, from here the A890 according to Strathcarron and Kyle of Lochalsh branches. Achnasheen has only about 50 inhabitants, according to the Census of 2001 48 people living in 18 households in the village.

Achnasheen has always been an important regional transport hub since branched out here coming from Inverness road in two directions. It was especially important as a stopover for cattle drives of cattle and sheep from the Highlands to the markets in the south. 1819 Achnasheen received the first built road connection, 1870, the station was opened. Queen Victoria used it in 1877 during a trip to Loch Maree. Due to the branching road connection in the North West Highlands Achnasheen was since the construction of the railway, a major hub for the postal, freight and passenger. The place is since that time postal town for much of the north-west lying places that have in some cases significantly more residents. In Achnasheen is also a Primary School is located. The applied during construction of the railway Achnasheen Hotel burned down in 1994 and was not rebuilt. In addition to the post office, school and train station Achnasheen has on infrastructure only cafe and a hotel. Besides the rail link bus connections exist to Gairloch, Kinlochewe and Inverness. Until deregulation as a result of the Transport Act 1980, the buses assured in Achnasheen connection to the web, since the mid- 1980s, she runs non-stop parallel to the train to Inverness. The place serves as a starting point for hikers, climbers and hunters in the surrounding, largely uninhabited parts of the Highlands. North of the village is the Fionn Bheinn, with 933 m the highest mountain in the area.
